Featured Artist: Yann Novak

Yann Novak is a Los Angeles-based interdisciplinary artist, composer, and curator working at the intersection of sound, light, and space. Through his residency on Headphone Community, we will go deeper into his practice, in which Yann treats sound as a physical and spatial experience, often blurring the boundaries between installation, performance, and recording. Fans of microsound, minimal ambient, and drone would be delighted to be immersed in all the music we will cover. Then, of course, there is Yann’s label, Dragon’s Eye Recordings, which, since 2005, has been blessing our ears with some of the best in experimental, sound art, and electroacoustic music.

I met Yann in person, back in April of 2009, when I flew from Chicago to Los Angeles for a three-day Resonant Forms festival, where he performed alongside William Basinski, Richard Chartier, Christopher Willits, Kadet Kuhne, Lucky Dragons, and Celer. This was the time when I was fascinated by dark environments, carefully manipulated with the synthetic and organic sounds, atmospheric field recordings, and acoustic space. And of course, I’m still very much intrigued by all these sounds, so I can’t wait to [re]visit some of his timeless recordings that we will explore throughout the month!

I’ve just looked over the upcoming schedule, and I have to say upfront, we have a pretty packed agenda ahead of us! Expect a write-up almost every day! Yann has been very accommodating with Bandcamp codes, which means that a lot of music awaits you ahead! I hope it won’t feel rushed, and that you’ll find the time to take it all in! I’m really looking forward to sharing it all with you, and taking a bit of the time to slow down and really listen to some of these sounds.

Over at Headphone Community, Yann wrote his own quick introduction. Throughout this month, we will be sharing some exclusive and previously unreleased pieces, a treasure trove of Bandcamp codes, and an in-depth conversation on his music, performance, practice, and, of course, his influential imprint, which, since 2005, has been blessing our ears with some of the best in experimental, sound art, and electroacoustic music. Join a like-minded community and chat with Yann directly on our platform, for as little as $1 a month!
